Last week we had the opportunity to listen to Jane Kovacs about the Seniors' Net Program (NETWORK of Community Ministries).
She told us and showed video about heartwarming stories of friends being made and the rapidly increased popularity of this program.
Marco DeLeon was inducted into RERC on 2-21-2024.
Marco is a proud DFW area resident since 1998. Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas; he arrived to Dallas in 1998 to attend SMU where he ran Cross Country and Track and Field, and majored in History. He currently serves at the best high school in all of Texas – International Leadership of Texas, Garland High School. He loves the daily opportunity to serve as our school motto firmly aligns as “Others Before Self”. We continue to create exceptional servant leaders that provide so me so much hope and promise for our collective future.
Welcome Marco!
On 2/14 Lindsey Parker was formally inducted into our club!
Born in Florida but raised in North Carolina where she received a degree from UNC Chapel Hill, Lindsey is an East Coast transplant. She spent several years living and working in Washington, D.C. before she headed west via Kansas City and eventually ended up in the great state of Texas. She currently lives in Northeast Dallas and looks forward to being a homeowner again someday. In the meantime, she’s enjoying apartment amenities (especially the pool in the scorching 5-month Dallas summer), proximity to walks around White Rock Lake, and Central Market. When she’s not working or walking, you can find her working out, pie making or meeting up with high school and college athletes for mentorship.
Welcome Lindsey!
Hosted by the lovely Lin Adi of Credit Union of Texas and RERC, members of Richardson East and the Plano Chamber had a blast at the Dallas Sidekicks game!
On 1/24 we volunteered at Network of Community Ministries. There is a big need right now to sort clothes, stock shelves in the food pantry, and much more!
On 1/17 we had the pleasure to host Luis DeLeon from the City of Richardson Animal Shelter. He educated us on what you need to know as a Pet Owner in Richardson. Very informative and comprehensive. For more information go to http://www.cor.net/animalservices.
Last week we had a great time at Guitars and Growlers for a fun evening with a lot of conversations, food, drinks and live music.
Kim Quirk, the CEO of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce gave us an update on the new structure of the Chamber and the plans going forward.
Quirk has been an active in the North Texas community for more than 25 years. She was on the board of trustees for the Richardson Independent School District for nine years, where she served five terms as president. In this capacity, she led the district through major changes in direction and worked extensively with statewide elected officials to shape education legislation. She served on the boards of the Collin County Community College Foundation where she chaired the corporate giving program, Richardson YMCA, New Beginning Center, Dallas Black Dance Theater, and the RISD Excellence in Education Fund. Quirk was an ex oficio member of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce Executive Board and previously was on the Chamber’s Women in Leadership Committee, where she was a tri-chair, the Education Committee and the Public Policy Committee. Additionally, Quirk served on the City of Richardson Charter Review Commission that was tasked with updating the document.
Before Christmas the RERC members and guests had the opportunity to hear from Richardson's Fire Chief Curtis Poovey.
Poovey is a Certified Fire Executive by the Texas Fire Chief’s Association, completed the Fire Service Chief Executive Officer Program at Texas A&M University, is a hazardous materials incident commander, paramedic, level 3 instructor, Fire Officer IV and has served as the president of the Dallas County Fire Chiefs Association, Board Member of the Paramedic Advisory Board for Richland College and UT Southwestern and is a Medical Incident Support Team Member and Task Force Leader for the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force.
Poovey joined the Richardson Fire Department in May 1993 as a Firefighter and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1999, Fire Captain in 2001, Battalion Chief in 2009 and has served as the Assistant Chief of Operations since January of this year.
Mark and Kathleen Denny hosted our Holiday party this year in their beautiful home with food from Blue Mesa. It was a record turnout and we had a lot of fun with the white elephant exchange. Some of those we will for sure see next year!
Andrew Hervey was inducted into the Richardson East Rotary Club by his sponsor John O'Haugherty. Andrew is a local commercial real estate agent, and his office is located in Richardson.
Welcome Andrew!
We had the pleasure of listening to the Forestridge Elementary School Choir's Christmas program. They did a really good job and also added an encore with some songs with movements!
Thank you for coming and putting us into the Holiday spirit!
Santa's village has one weekend under the belt and we have had the opportunity to engage with a lot of kids in the K-ELF TV station. This is really a success with the kids and their parents and many call out our house as their favorite.
On the5th Wednesday in November the Richardson East Rotary Club had the opportunity to create baskets for seniors at the Network of Community Ministries. Food items as well as personal care items were packaged into baskets for needing seniors.
On 11/15 we had the great opportunity to listen to presentations from 2 of the RYLA recipients from International Leadership of Texas, Acacia Huang and Peter Feng. They shared their life changing experiences they received through RYLA.
Acacia stated "RYLA taught me so much. I learned the importance of being perceptive to the people in my team and conditions around me, of being flexible and adaptable, of being able to fill any role that the team needs rather than always seeking the paradigm leadership position, and helping your team to play to everyone’s strengths and support each other through working on our weaknesses."
Peter's takeaway from RYLA was: "RYLA has been a life-changing experience for me. I have been to many summer camps before, but I feel like RYLA is the place where people care about my personal growth and connections."
You can see their full RYLA presentations here:

On 10/25 the Richardson East Rotary Club packed boxes with food for families needing support from Network. The members are becoming highly effective at this type of work and with the addition of some friendly competition between the assembly lines we finished well within the allotted time.
Rob Banes was formally inducted into the RERC membership on 10/25.
Rob lives in Murphy Texas and is a Shareholder/CPA with Schwarz CPA in Richardson Texas. He has been a Rotarian since August 17, 2007 and was District Treasurer under PDG’s Sandy Forster, Ean Sullivan, Bill Dendy and Larry Webb. In his downtime, he enjoys travelling, reading a good book and grilling.
The District 5810 Governor John Curtis and his wife visited Richardson East Rotary Club on 9/6. He commended our club for all the activities we are doing and for growing the club. Instead of having a long presentation the Governor made a short address to the club and then we conducted a service project, packing snack bags for children for families in need.
On September 13th the Richardson East Rotary Club met for a social event at the Amigos restaurant in Richardson. Thanks to Hollis the event included a birthday celebration also. :-)
On the 5th Wednesday meeting on the 30th of August we packed backpacks for youth at Network of Community Ministries.
The backpacks are part of Network's youth programs where a variety of seasonal youth programming meets the needs of the youngest members of our families in need.
The backpacks are part of the Tools 4 School program which provides backpacks filled with supplies for school aged-children.

A lot of fun and camaraderie was had at the Happy Hour on 8/9/23 at the Monkey King Noodle Company in Richardson. A few people interested in learning more about the Richardson East Rotary Club attended as well.
I treasured the opportunity to attend the Rotary International Convention “Imagine” in Melbourne, Australia in May 2023. It was a tremendous learning experience and such an honor to represent our club throughout this beautifully-orchestrated event! The host committee did an outstanding job of organizing all aspects of the convention. From the inspiring General Sessions to transportation between the Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention Center to the engaging breakout sessions, the House of Friendship, the luncheon for Presidents Elect, it was all simply amazing! One of the most moving experiences was at the beginning of the first General Session, when 300+ flags from countries throughout the world were paraded throughout the arena. An important illustration of how Rotary’s important mission reaches all corners of our world and unites us as we respond to countless humanitarian efforts. Thank you for the opportunity to represent the Richardson East Rotary Club!
Warmest regards,
Laurie Garvie
RERC President 2023/2024
